ELMIRA, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team claimed their third Empire 8 Athletic Conference win of the season with a 3-2 victory on the road against Elmira College Wednesday evening.
The
Saxons (9-12, 3-3 Empire 8) have not had three Empire 8 wins in over 10 years as they establish their first win streak since late September's back-to-back wins against SUNY-Delhi and Hartwick College.
Alfred University earned a 25-14 win in the first set before dropping the second and third sets to the host Soaring Eagles 19-25 and 23-25. The Saxons finished the match strong with a 25-16 fourth set win and a 15-9 fifth set decider.
The Saxons were led by first year
Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) and her 22.5 points from 20 kills, two aces and one assisted block. She added a team-second 13 digs and even had a helper on one kill. This is the third time in her collegiate career with 20 or more kills.
Juniors
Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville) and
Heather D'Andrea (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) followed in points with 16.5 and 15.0, respectively. Hicks had 12 kills, a match-high three solo blocks and three assisted blocks. D'Andrea tallied her points from 11 kills, three aces and two assisted blocks. She also led the Saxons in digs with 16 and added a set assist.
Junior
Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had an outstanding showing with 43 set assists, just two shy of tying her career best of 45 set assists in a single match. She led the Saxons with four aces as well which tied her season-best.
Sophomore
Elisabeth Estep (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) also broke into double figures in digs with 11 as she added two aces.
The Saxons will next compete in the Alfred Volleyball Tournament which is a two-day event held on Friday, October 14 at Alfred State and Saturday, October 15 at Alfred University's Terry S. Galanis Family Arena. The Saxons take on Morrisville State College at 5:00 pm on Friday before their 7:00 pm match against Hilbert College. Saturday's matches are University of Maine at Fort Kent at 10:00 am and University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 2:00 pm. Both of Saturday's matches are the Dig Pink matches.
